When our residents have stayed with us for 3 month

When our residents have stayed with us for 3 months they are eligible to get a visit from their supporters. This includes a family/supporters session with the therapeutic team.

Fears, expectations and boundaries are discussed and agreed upon.

After a successful session, the recovering addict and their supporters can enjoy a weekend out.

Being careful not to return to their old environments we encourage local stay.

While it can be perceived as a holiday, it is also a good indication of the addicts' recovery and where their areas of improvement can be focused moving forward.

Below from one of our new residents sharing his feelings towards his addiction.

ADDICTION
I wish I never met you and I hate your existence. You destroy potential, break down households and you had me convinced that that would never be me until I entered rehab and realized how much you took away from me.
I despise you, I resent you and I curse the day I got hooked on drugs and you became a part of me, because you showed me no mercy, even when I was in despair and crumbling on my knees.
I stole and I lied just to fill your need and that led to losing a part of me. You just grew bigger and prideful and I became shallow and misguided which tarnished my own image.
I thought you would bring me freedom but that was just one of your schemes to keep me captive. From now on I am breaking free, hopefully, you stay away from me and even at my lowest I don’t want to meet you again.
I am starting to love myself and you have no room in that relationship, by the time you find this letter just know I have gone. I have forgiven you and now I ask you to let me be, to find peace and fulfil the purpose GOD intended for me.

Extreme Abilities goes surfing in Paternoster (part 2) 😎🌊🏄☀

The Pelgrims Place residents were water supporters in an Extreme Abilities event on the Paternoster main beach. The aim was to assist disabled kids and people to experience surfing and being in the ocean.

A testimony from another of the residents that assisted;
“Being able to help today was an experience I’ll never forget. Before going I was nervous and I didn’t know what to expect. Initially, I didn’t sign up but now I am so glad I got the opportunity. To see the happy smiles on their faces was so rewarding and to see something I take for granted is something that someone else can’t do without assistance was humbling. While I was in the ocean helping, I felt like a kid again. I am a lot more grateful for what I am able to do and how helping with something small for me can be so big for someone else. It’s definitely something I would do again.” SF

Extreme Abilities goes surfing with Pelgrims Place. (part 1) 😎🌊🏄

The residents participated as water supporters in an Extreme Abilities event on the Paternoster main beach.

We were humbled to participate in a new adventure called adaptive surfing, helping the physically disabled have some fun in the water! The smile on their faces is so heart-warming and it was a truly special morning spent helping others😁 What a gift to help people learn to ride waves and enjoy a great day together.

“Today we went to help Extreme Abilities at Paternoster beach to teach disabled people and kids to surf! I was honestly a bit nervous at first but once I took the first kid into the water and saw the excitement on his face it made my heart so unbelievably happy! It made me realise the simple things I take for granted, like being able to surf and be in the ocean almost every day, where for many of them it was their first time. I truly feel very honoured and privileged to have had the opportunity to help them and would love to get more involved with these types of programs.” DN

Much to our surprise, our bio-aquatic, self-sustaining pond is in full working order. It has taken us some time to find the balance between a clean and a self-sustaining pond. Our biofiltration system has been created with aquatic plants, rocks and natural algae that keep the pond clean. Our fish are very content and the benefit of the pond being self-sustained is that the fish can feed themselves on the natural goodness that grows within the pond. 🐟🍃💚 As an added bonus it also creates an atmosphere of calm with the water and fish as elements of nature are brought into our living space 🧘☯️

Fred, the little Cape Robin 🐦befriended us two years ago much to our surprise.
He arrived and has never left. Fred flutters around from kitchen to dorm, rec room to the porch and where ever else he can find something to nibble on. Fred is not as tame as we would like him to be but most definitely not shy to be part of the community 😊 Fred’s son is also a new addition to our community and flutters about with no shame marking his territory where ever he goes 😂

A year ago we initiated our monthly fitness test. We record the 1 mile run as well as push-ups, sit-ups and squats that are done in a minute. We also track BMI and weight. 🏋️‍♂️💪🏃‍♂️🎖

We had delicious chicken burgers with a mountain of salad. Not our chickens but the salad goodies are the results of lots of hard work and effort in the gardens over the last 3 months.

We hope to add more great salad crops from the garden this summer;

Creatively working with art materials like clay or paint is an excellent way to represent, express and reinforce the lessons the residents gained regarding trauma as well as the meaning and tools available for understanding and growth in recovery.

Following on from our coastal foraging experience we decided to reinforce the learning with a cooking challenge using locally foraged plants and food. This also goes hand in hand with our quest to be self-sufficient and self-sustaining. The foraging workshop/challenge saw the three teams presenting a starter, main and dessert. These tasks were met with plenty of enthusiasm, passion and creativity from the participating residents.

"At Pelgrims Place I started to realize that I am a human with an addiction problem, not a human who is a problem. When I saw that glimmer of hope I clung to it tightly with both hands and immersed myself fully into the program.

It was the most beautiful process, one of slowly figuring out who the person behind my addiction was, and learning how to love that person.
At first, I had no idea how to do that, so I followed the program as best as I could. My fellow residents and staff members guiding me and keeping me accountable on the right path. For this, I will be forever grateful, and one thing that I can say about the staff and leaders’ level of love and dedication to what they do is incredibly hard to match.

The people here poured so much of themselves into me, and through this journey I finally have hope beaming inside of me, that cannot be stripped from me.

These 6 months completely changed and saved my life, in a way I never could have done on my own – time really does heal and you need a long time to recover yourself after a long road of addiction.

🍅 Delicious tomatoes picked from Pelgrims Place veggie garden, already a miracle growing in the middle of winter, super cool😁. We whipped up a glaze with vinegar and sugar, drizzled that over the tomatoes with some mixed herbs. Roasted on low heat for half an hour to create tasty, sticky goodness.
Meal prep with healthy food from our garden is one of the joys and rewards residents discover as part of the recovery journey here.

"I remember the morning I drove to Pelgrims Place with anxiety, hopelessness and debilitating depression. I was warned that I was going to lose 6 months of my life to a facility and that I was going to be a case beyond help. Looking back on my 6 months now I have gained so much more than I ever could have hoped for. While I was caught in my addiction, I fell into an incredibly dark place that I had no chance of getting myself out of.

All my relationships were tainted with lies and pain and my reputation was beyond repair. I was running from myself at high speed but still not going anywhere besides backwards. I had no idea who I was and in turn, my connection to myself, my loved ones and the world around me were virtually non-existent. I was sucked dry of any hope for myself and resided in desperate self-pity.

My life and everything in it had gone sour and ruined, the only constant throughout addiction was me – I thought I was the problem and my personality/identity would be my demise.

When I came to rehab, I started to reconnect with myself on a difficult but incredibly rewarding journey of self-discovery."
